Welcome to the official website of Salem United Church Cemetery, located in Summerstown, ON. As one of the oldest community cemeteries in the area, Salem Cemetery was established in the late 1780s and spans a picturesque 2.5 acres, featuring two sections adorned with majestic trees and a rock stone fence along the St. Lawrence River in the historic community of Summerstown. It serves as the final resting place for over 600 individuals, including some United Empire Loyalists.

Salem United Church Cemetery is managed by a dedicated committee of volunteers and proudly serves the local community.

Annual Memorial Service

A memorial service is held each year on or around the second Sunday in June.  Those buried over the last 5 years are named and a flower is provided to family so that they may place it on their grave.  

Everyone is welcome!  Rain or shine. Following the Memorial Service, a light lunch is provided in Stokes Hall, Salem United Church.

Our Next Memorial Service will take place on June 6th, 2027 at 11:00 am

United Empire Loyalists

Some people buried in the cemetery were UELAC men, women and children who remained loyal to the British Crown during the American Revolutionary War which raged from 1175 to 1783.   As a result in 1784, many soldiers and their families were given tracks of land in Upper Canada  for their service and settled in the region.  Thus the humble beginning our Salem United Church Cemetery.
